The new Piedmontese ruler, Victor Emmanuel II, meets with Radetzky at a farmhouse in Vignale, north of Novara, and negotiates the end of the war. Victor Emmanuel will later backtrack, but the Kingdom of Sardinia will never become like the other states of the peninsula, remaining a point of reference for all liberals and democrats in Italy.
