March 23, 1944

3:42 PM. Via Rasella, Rome. The South Tyrolean soldiers of the SS “Bozen” battalion march in a compact group. Suddenly, a huge explosion erupts right in their midst, and they explode into the air like disjointed puppets. The street is covered in blood. There are 16 dead, 60 wounded, 20 of whom are in desperate condition (of whom 17 will die the next day).
