March 1974

Lieutenant Hiroo Onada of the Imperial Japanese Army emerges from the jungle in Lubang, Philippines, unaware that World War II had ended 29 years earlier. He agrees to surrender only after speaking with his commander (who was still alive in Japan). He won’t be the last to surrender: in April 1980, Captain Fumio Nakashira is found in the Mindoro Mountains, also in the Philippines.
