United States. To facilitate Enrico Fermi’s work, physics professor George Pergram wrote Admiral Stanford Hooper a letter introducing the potential of uranium for warfare. The following day, Enrico Fermi met with the US Navy, advised by Leo Szilard, to discuss the possibility of using a new explosive (uranium) with a power one million times greater than conventional explosives.
