Alexander II was assassinated by a bomb in St. Petersburg. Two of his sons would suffer violent deaths: Grand Duke Sergei was assassinated by a bomb in the Moscow Kremlin in 1905, and Grand Duke Paul was shot by the Bolsheviks in the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1919.
