Florence. A violent Allied bombing devastates the city. A bomb hits the ambulance carrying Red Cross volunteer painter Guido Spadolini. At home, his wife and children wait in vain for his return. One of the boys, Giovanni, will become a journalist after the war, and then a historian, a minister of the Republic, and Prime Minister.
