Thomas Alva Edison overcame his stage fright, partly due to his near-total deafness, by reading a speech in public on the plaster telephone receiver he invented, with Alexander Graham Bell in the audience. He would not give another public speech for 50 years, until the “Golden Jubilee of Light” in his honor in 1929.
