The US Air Force begins the WS117L (Weapon System 117L) program. This is the first space-based photographic reconnaissance system. It will later evolve into the CORONA spy satellites (initially known by the covert acronym Discoverer). CORONA will be managed by the US Air Force and the CIA. (CIA-managed projects generally have all-capitalized acronyms.)
