Siege of Petersburg, Virginia by Union troops. Petersburg is located just south of the Confederate capital, Richmond. The Northerners accumulate a huge number of soldiers in trenches on the outskirts of the city and continue to attack and bombard it until General Lee’s troops retreat. This is the first trench battle, a foreshadowing of the battles of attrition of World War I.
