Fortitude Plan: At 7:15 pm, the BBC read, among the personal messages: “Message for little Berthe – Salomon has jumped on his big clogs.” The first part of the message had been broadcast even before the Normandy landings as a message to French partisans who the British knew had been captured and therefore assumed, rightly, that the Nazis had extorted the meaning of the code from them through torture; the second part of the code meant that a landing would take place within 24 hours at the Franco-Belgian border.
