The Venetian fleet stops in Corfu. Here Zane meets the man who will replace him after six months: the elderly provveditore of Corfu, Sebastiano Venier. Together they decide to attack the Ottoman fortress of Sopotò, in the Albanian mountains. The Ottomans flee without a fight, and Venier raises the standard of St. Mark over the empty fort.
