Father Pietro Angelo Secchi (Reggio nell’Emilia, June 28, 1818 – Rome, February 26, 1878) was an Italian Jesuit, astronomer, and geodesist, the founder of astronomical spectroscopy. He was the director of the Collegio Romano Observatory and the first to classify stars into spectral classes.
