An RAF Spitfire pilot managed to damage the inertial navigation system of a V-1 by touching one of the fins that stabilized the aircraft with the tip of his wing; with this method and refinements to it (which included diving close to the V-1) 1847 rockets were shot down; another 1866 were shot down by anti-aircraft fire, 12 by naval defense, and 232 exploded against anti-aircraft balloons.
