Construction of the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) computer begins for the U.S. War Department. Mauchly is the consultant and visionary, and Eckert is the chief engineer. It uses a decimal (i.e., non-binary) system, conditional branching, and subroutines. It will not be operational until November 1945.
