Battle of Bunker Hill: 4:00 PM, Third Assault: This time, after several volleys, the British opened fire on the American lines with their cannons. The men were literally torn to pieces. The American lines also ran out of ammunition. A retreat was ordered. Congressman General Joseph Warren also died, and Benjamin Prescott was cut in two by a cannonade. The British took the hill, but the cost was heavy: 1,150 soldiers lost out of a total of 2,500. The Americans lost 441 soldiers (140 killed, 271 wounded, and 30 captured). It was a Pyrrhic victory for the British, who had not intended to capture the hill, but who realized that the rebel army could win the war.
