Russia. First and second rounds of elections. Boris Yeltsin wins the runoff with 64% of the vote to Zyuganov’s 41%. To prevent a communist return to power, Western governments, led by the United States, finance Yeltsin’s election campaign. This is the first time the American government has directly influenced the election outcome in Russia.
