Normandy. Montgomery makes an attempt to break the German front. He throws the British 7th Armored Division (the Desert Rats) into a right-handed attack on Tilly’s front. If the attempt succeeds, Caen would be bypassed. But a single Tiger tank destroys 27 Allied tanks (the number varies depending on the source). The German tank commander is Lieutenant Michael Wittman (30) of the Waffen SS, who is said to have destroyed hundreds of Soviet tanks on the Russian front. He dies on August 8th in a British tank ambush. His exploit in Normandy gives the Germans time to pin down the British and hold Caen for a few more days.
