Ser Piero da Vinci, Leonardo’s father, dies. Once again, Leonardo, recording the event in his diary, misstated the date and his father’s age by two years, as he had done with his mother. Piero da Vinci never legally recognized Leonardo, leaving him without an inheritance. Leonardo was therefore Piero’s son, but an “illegitimate” one.
