Melbourne, Australia. International Conference on High Energy Physics. Representatives of two LHC experiments, American Joseph Incandela for CMS and Italian Fabiola Giannotti for ATLAS, introduce themselves to the audience and begin with “WE HAVE A DISCOVERY.” This is the official announcement of the discovery of the Higgs boson (the “God particle” as Leon Lederman called it), with a 5-sigma (99.99994%) confidence level, which confers the property of mass to all other particles. At the LHC in Geneva, the discovery (with 5-sigma confidence level) of the Higgs boson is experimentally confirmed, with an estimated mass of around 125.3 GeV (measured by the CMS detector) – 126.0 GeV (measured by the ATLAS detector).
