The 372-kg copper projectile released by the American Deep Impact probe crashes at 10 km/s into comet Tempel 1 to test its consistency and chemical composition through spectrographic analysis of the ejecta. The impact lifts off 5 million kg of water ice and 25 million kg of dust.
