After a date with Tony Provenzano and Tony Giacalone, James “Jimmy” Riddle Hoffa, a powerful and controversial union leader from 1957 to 1971, disappears. His body was never found. He was declared legally dead in 1982. Hoffa was implicated in mafia organizations. His story was fictionalized in Scorsese’s film “Irishman,” starring Al Pacino as Hoffa and De Niro as the Irishman (Frank Sheeran). In the film, Scorsese demonstrates the book’s thesis, “I heard you paint houses.” (This line is the first one Hoffa uttered to Sheeran over the phone, where the paint refers to the blood spurted from the gunshots, thus requesting Sheeran to confirm his profession as a killer.)
