England wins the World Cup. In the first televised World Cup match, hosts England defeat Germany 4-2 at Wembley to win the final. In extra time, Geoff Hurst scored his third goal, securing his country’s first Jules Rimet Cup. England’s star Bobby Charlton was marked by Franz Beckenbauer, a rising star in German football, who blocked the England midfielder from goal. Hurst’s winning goal sparked considerable controversy, as the ball, after bouncing off the crossbar, failed to cross the net. Hurst himself scored the 4-2 goal in the final minute of extra time.
