The first Northern offensive on the Mississippi River ends in partial and temporary failure: Vicksburg and 300 kilometers of river remain firmly in Southern hands, albeit at the cost of heavy losses. The beached battleship Arkansas is reluctantly blown up by its own sailors. 1862, which had begun badly for the Confederates, now turns out for the better, both on the Mississippi River and in Tennessee, as well as at Fortress Atlantic and its Iron Door: the Virginia.
