Indonesia. The Dutch, exasperated by their lack of control of the archipelago, launch a police operation to overthrow the Indonesian Republic. The attempt is stopped by the United Nations, and in December 1949, power is transferred to Indonesia. But it will take another 12 years to resolve other major limitations, such as the Dutch non-restitution of the western half of New Guinea and Dutch ownership (of Shell) of the country’s natural resources.
