American intelligence estimates Japan’s military strength: 2 million men in the mainland islands, 2 million in China and Korea, and 0.8 million in the rest of the Far East. The Japanese army is therefore practically intact, while the same cannot be said of the other branches: the Imperial Navy has practically ceased to exist, while the air force is practically reduced to 5,000 (feared) Kamikazes. The invasion of Japan is estimated to employ at least 5 million soldiers and marines, and 1 million American casualties are expected, with many more Japanese, before the estimated end of hostilities in late 1946.
