President Truman addressed Stalin with, “We have a new weapon, endowed with uncommon destructive force.” He mistakenly assumed Stalin didn’t understand the meaning of that phrase. Instead, Stalin ordered the effort to build nuclear weapons to be accelerated and entrusted Beria, head of the secret police, with overseeing the project.
