Schwarzschild proposes that the geometry of the universe is not flat according to Euclid, but curved like the non-Euclidean geometries conceived just over a century earlier by Johann Lambert and the Italian Jesuit and mathematician Giovanni Sacchetti, and later developed in detail by Riemann, Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky.
