Jornada del Muerto, New Mexico. Robert Oppenheimer, head of the Manhattan Project, said of the moments after the bomb exploded: “We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people remained silent.” He then recalled that he himself had quoted some verses from the Hindu sacred text, Bagavagita: “Now I become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Aloud, after the explosion, he also recited the engineering commentary: “It worked.”
