Laugardalshöll Arena, Reykjavik, Iceland. World Chess Championship. Robert James Fischer, aka Bobby Fischer, challenges Soviet player Boris Spassky. The American champion initially refuses to participate in the match, arriving significantly late to the first match and then losing due to a trivial error. For the second match, the eccentric American doesn’t even show up, and the Soviet player is awarded the win. From the third match onward, the American wins a remarkable seven games to Spassky’s one, who then withdraws on September 3rd.
