Armistice of Villafranca. The French and Piedmontese armies narrowly won the bloody battle against the Austrians in Lombardy. The armistice was negotiated with their Austrian counterparts by Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II, keeping Cavour in the dark, who was informed only after the fact. The armistice gave Piedmont Lombardy but not Veneto, but it seemed a shameful betrayal to Cavour, who had masterminded a complex plan that had led to the French entry into the war against Austria, as predicted. Cavour subsequently resigned, but was soon recalled by the king.
