Modena. Napoleonic soldiers smashed the Belleardi marble monument with hammers. They reduced it to fine fragments so that the layer they formed on the ground would “drain the horses’ urine.” This historical testimony was later confirmed by excavations conducted during renovations in 2007, when 440 fragments were found.
