Kabul. The British negotiate a surrender with the Afghan rebels, and a mournful caravan of soldiers, having abandoned all their artillery, leaves the city and heads for Jalalabad, the gateway to India. Of the 16,000 who set out, only a few arrive. It seems that only one surviving British soldier arrives. Thus, the first British attempt to control Afghanistan and keep the Russians away from India fails.
