The Greenpoint Shipyard in Brooklyn, New York, launches the USS Monitor, the first Union battleship. It features a double hull with 5-inch armor, a waterline of just 18 inches below the deck, a rotating turret with 8-inch armor, and two large 11-inch Dahlgreen guns. It displaces 1,500 tons and is manned by 58 sailors.
