The Space Shuttle Challenger explodes during launch. The disaster is caused by human error; the order to launch is given given the number of political figures present, despite the temperature having dropped below the minimum limit during the night. This causes a seal ring on a Solid Rocket Booster to weaken and rupture, resulting in its explosion during launch. Among other scientific experiments, it also had a telescope on board for observing Halley’s Comet.
