Japanese soldier found hiding in Guam. Farmers in Guam discovered Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant who, unaware of the end of World War II, had been hiding in the jungle for 28 years. An American possession in the western Pacific, Guam had been attacked and conquered by the Japanese in 1941. Three years later, American forces retook the island. It was then that Yokoi, left behind as the Japanese retreated, decided to go into hiding rather than surrender to the enemy. He made survival tools and awaited the return of his compatriots for further orders. Discovered in 1972, he was freed and sent back to Japan, where he was welcomed as a national hero. He later married and returned to Guam for his honeymoon.
