Obizzo d’Este was invited to Modena by the Modena magnates to put an end to the long-standing conflicts and wars between the intrines (families within the walls) and the extrinsics (families driven out into the countryside where they had often built fortifications). On January 23, 1290, construction began on a castle, which would form the basis of the current Ducal Palace.
