England. Maria Beatrice d’Este, wife of James Stuart, Duke of York, gives birth to a baby girl: Caterina Laura. Unfortunately, she will die on October 13th of the same year. For Maria Beatrice, that day will mark the end of her joy and the beginning of an incredible series of losses. In addition to Caterina Laura (January 21 – October 13, 1675), they will also have children: Isabella (1676-81); Charles, Duke of Cambridge (November 7 – December 12, 1677); their baby, born in early March 1681, dies almost immediately, and Carla, just three days after birth, in August 1682. Among the unfortunate births, the couple also experienced forced exile from London for a period of exile in Brussels, from 1679 to 1684, followed by an obligatory stay in Edinburgh.
