Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina. Nathanael Greene (after whom many American cities were named, including Greenville, SC), who had replaced Gates as commander of the American troops in the South, attacked the British at Cowpens. 90% of the British forces were captured (830) or killed (110). The defeat was disastrous for the Englishman Cornwallis, who was also pushed into enemy territory, towards Virginia. The Battle of Cowpens and the subsequent Battle of Guilford were the events that inspired the film The Patriot starring Mel Gibson.
