January 1571

Venetian Marco Quirini casts bait at Ottoman ships off the coast of Cyprus. He sinks three of them. Then, as night falls, he disembarks reinforcements and supplies for Farmagosta: 1,319 soldiers, six cannons, four culverins, 1,400 barrels of gunpowder, and dozens of other artillery pieces (46 in all). He also ships 800 barrels of wine (the besieged sufferers from dysentery and were rightly convinced that the disease lay in the water).
