Namibia. The Herero, tenacious and tough Namibian herders, rise up en masse against the German settlers. Led by Samuel Maharero, they kill all the Germans they can find in the Okahandja area, sparing only women and children. The victims number over a hundred. In response, Kaiser Wilhelm II sends General Adrian Dietrich Lothar von Trotha with orders to “restore order by any means necessary.” Von Trotha chooses the most infamous and despicable. On August 11, he carries out a massacre in Hamakari.
