Palermo, Sicily. The uprising begins timidly in the early part of the day. Neapolitan troops remain confined to their barracks. Then, towards evening, it begins to spread throughout the city, and barricades appear in the streets. At that point, the elite Bourbon garrison of 5,000 men intervenes, and another 6,000 men arrive from the sea. But by then it is too late, and the defenses, street by street, prove impregnable.
