Frederick Barbarossa sends a delegation to Milan, led by Reinaldo of Dassel, to appoint a German podestà to replace the consuls. This act is in direct violation of the peace treaty signed by Frederick himself with the consuls of Milan. The Milanese population refuses to welcome the Germans and attacks the imperial envoys. Cries of “Fora! Fora! Mora! Mora!” (Take them out and let them die!) rage. Stones are thrown from windows and rooftops.
