On January 11, 1973, when the second Lunokhod spacecraft blasted off for the Moon, the Apollo missions were over, and the Soviets knew they finally had the Moon all to themselves… The landing site, Taurus Mountains on January 16, was only 180 km from where the Americans had landed with Apollo 17 a few weeks earlier. It transmitted images every 3 seconds this time and traveled a full 37 km until May, when it became stuck in a lunar crater.
