Grace Hopper dies at 86. After starting out as a math teacher, she spent a full career in the Navy. In 1983, she received the rank of commodore (a US Navy rank now called rear admiral) from President Ronald Reagan. Grace Hopper can be considered the inventor of high-level programming language compilers, which she envisioned as a way to communicate with computers in English. She also coined the term “bug” (when she found a real moth that had short-circuited the computer she was working on, she attached it with scotch tape to the report: bug found!
