American Revolution. French King Louis XVI, without even consulting his Spanish ally, recognized American independence and signed a treaty of alliance with the United States of America. Some historians believe he thus missed the opportunity to exploit Germany’s temporary weakness and embarked on a path of temporary victories at the cost of heavy debt and bankruptcy, which would lead to the French Revolution.
