The Soviets launch the first N-1, the rocket with the goal of carrying at least one man to the Moon; since scientists did not have time to design engines the size of the five of the Saturn V, the N-1 (Number 1) is equipped with 30 smaller engines, which will make it extremely vulnerable to engine failure; the first launch of the N-1 will see it explode due to a problem with one of the 50 engines 40 km from the launch pad (68.7 s after launch).
