U.S. Air Force Jumbo 747 uses its Laser Coil (Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser) to shoot down a ballistic missile launched from a mobile base off the California coast, destroying it. The test, after the Boeing jet took off from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert, was conducted as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative launched by President Reagan in 1996.
