The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that four Network Access Points (NAPs) will be built to replace the existing Internet backbone; they will be located in San Francisco (PacBell), Chicago (BellCore and Ameritech), New York (SprintLink), and Washington, DC (Metropolitan Fiber System).
