Montevideo, Uruguay. Herbert Cukurs, “the Butcher of Riga,” is assassinated by the Israeli Mossad. He was accused of killing over 30,000 men, women, and children. He was the leader of the Latvian Arajs Kommando, which collaborated with the Nazis. The Latvian Nazi Legion was among the last battalions to surrender to the Red Army on May 9, 1945, and several hundred members hid in the forest to continue their guerrilla warfare, the Forest Brothers, which would continue until the 1970s.
