Fourth Genoa-Venice War. Chioggia. In a joint action, Vettor Pisani takes Brondolo, while Carlo Zeno conquers Chioggia Minore, massacring the 10,000 Genoese who have taken the field. The siege of Chioggia Maggiore tightens, where Gaspare Spinola arrives to assume command, while Matteo Maruffo’s fleet is sent from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Off the coast of Puglia, Maruffo captures Taddeo Giustiniani’s Venetian ships, arriving off Chioggia in early July, but fails to force the blockade of the lagoon, and the Venetians refuse to engage in battle. The extremely rigorous surveillance thwarts both the Paduan and Friulian attempts to supply Chioggia and the besieged forces’ forays in small boats.
